12 Christmas Tech Tips #10: Tips and Tricks for VR Headsets
Were you one of the lucky ones who received a Virtual Reality (VR) Headsets over Christmas or have you have bought a headset for your children?
Here are my top 5 tips and tricks that will help you make the most of your headset and ensure that you get the best experience in the virtual realm of your choice.
These are my top 5 tips
1. FOG FREE VR LENSES
When using more popular VR headsets, extended use can cause the lenses to fog up. However, there is a simple household solution to prevent your VR set from fogging up – Shaving foam! Firstly make sure the lenses on your VR headset are clean, then and apply a very thin coating of shaving foam directly to the lenses. Gently rub the foam into the lenses and leave for about 5 minutes. Be careful to not apply any shaving foam on any other part of the headset or on any electrical devices. After 5 minutes, buff the lenses clean with the anti-static cloth (which will be already included with some VR headsets).
The cleaning effect should last around 3 days depending on usage.
2. REALISE THE FULL POTENTIAL OF YOUR VR HEADSET!
VR is much more than just interactive visuals. Now, most of the top developers include 3D spatial audio too. This means that when you turn your head, the balance of audio will adjust accordingly to increase the sense of realism, adding to your overall experience in the virtual world. So in order to truly appreciate this, always wear headphones and if you have access to a noise cancelling pair, this will help to further enhance your VR worlds to the fullest.
3. UNLEASH THE FULL POWER OF VR
To run VR experiences as smoothly as possible and to the optimal, we suggest switching off any apps and services that you will not be using during your VR experiences. This includes any apps that use the camera (such as Smart Screen, which uses the camera to determine whether the phone is being looked at), Auto-Screen brightness and background data. If you are unsure of what to do you can use Greenify for an easy way to disable background apps.
4. NEVER MISS OUT
There are hundreds of virtual reality apps out for you to experience. So it can be very difficult at times to find just the right app for you.
However, once you have found your perfect app… always keep it updated!
Search for the developer on social media to keep updated with new releases. Also, you can download the Google Cardboard app for Android or iPhone. The Google Cardboard app is fantastic because it features several VR experiences all in one place, all of which are of exceptional quality!
5. DON’T FEEL THE BURN
Most VR experiences are short, but if you start to experience slow frame rates, this may be caused by your phone getting too hot and overheating. The easiest solution is to turn your phone off for a few minutes and let it cool down while you take a break yourself, before starting the fun all over again!
